Thank you for applying for Specialized Committees. This year, YMUN is offering an array of exciting, advanced simulations that will allow delegates to engage with an array of modern and historical issues. Our staff has been working hard to create dynamic crises to stimulate intense debate over the course of the conference, and this year's Specialized Committees promise to be one heart-stopping diplomatic adventure after the next.
Please see brief descriptions of the application committees below, and select which committees interest you. Please note that while the Peacekeeping Advisory Committee: MONUC is in fact an ECOSOC committee, this application should be used for it as well.
Peacekeeping Advisory Committee: MONUC
With a force of 19,815 personnel, the United Nations Peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, or MONUC, is the largest of all current UN Peacekeeping missions. As outlined in a February 2000 Security Council resolution, MONUC is charged with providing support for human rights, humanitarian affairs, public information, child protection, political affairs, and medical and administrative infrastructure in DR Congo, which is still experiencing the world’s deadliest conflict since World War II. MONUC’s current mandate calls for it to help broker a ceasefire in the war-torn area, develop an action plan for implementing that ceasefire, negotiate the release of prisoners of war, facilitate human rights monitoring and humanitarian assistance, dispose of arms, and protect civilians. The mission has been ongoing since 1999, and its mandate was renewed in 2004, but will expire at the end of 2009. Delegates in this committee will first make recommendations to the Security Council about extending the mandate, and will then decide upon a strategy for successfully completing the mission.
Peruvian Cabinet
The Cabinet of Peruvian President Alan García will convene to discuss pressing issues of domestic, regional, and international politics and economics. Forced to contend with the mounting influence of the United States and wealthy South American nations such as Venezuela and Brazil, the Peruvian Cabinet will be forced to make tough decisions to successfully navigate their nation through a maelstrom of crises and policy issues.
ICJ
The International Court of Justice, based in The Hague, Netherlands, is the primary judicial organ of the United Nations. Its main functions are to settle legal disputes submitted to it by states and to give advisory opinions on legal questions submitted to it by duly authorized international bodies such as the UN General Assembly. Currently, the ICJ is faced with the difficult question presented to it by the General Assembly at the end of 2008 - the legality of the Unilateral Declaration of Independence of Kosovo from Serbia. 15 judges from around with world will have to analyze international legal norms in question, come to a consensus on this very contentious issue, and create an advisory opinion that will certainly have major global ramifications.
DNC '68 JCC
The Joint Crisis Simulation of the 1968 Democratic National Convention will pit disparate philosophies and personalities of the Democratic Party against each other to get their candidate nominated at this crucial juncture in American history. Party politics, public opinion, media coverage, and international affairs will all play a role in the tumultuous primary process in which only one side can win—and which will likely determine the course of the nation’s future.
Press Corps
The Press Corps will simulate the journalistic endeavors of the Al Jazeera and BBC news networks, covering topics taking place in and relevant to the Middle East, forcing the delegates to consider world issues from a distinct international perspective. The Press Corps will also consider issues of piracy and multimedia publishing to simulate competition for ratings and maximization of profits while maintaining journalistic integrity.
