TOPIC PREVIEW: FOOD SECURITY - According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, around 852 million people worldwide are chronically hungry due to extreme poverty—in other words, they are “food insecure.” A food secure household is one in which food is readily available and its members do not live in hunger, but have access to enough food for an active, healthy life. That food must be nutritionally adequate and safe, and acquired in a socially acceptable way—that is, nto through scavenging, stealing, or emergency supplies. Food insecurity is often directly tied to poverty, yet food security is not as simple an issue as it looks; a large variety of factors affects food security throughout the world, including the use of biofuels in farming, population growth, climate change, the availability of agricultural land, and growing food demand. In UNEP, delegates will attempt to discuss and identify the most important factors affecting food security around the world and develop plans for improving it.
